The secret to getting pregnant with your own eggs at 40

At the beginning of their 40s, many women face a crucial question: Is there still a realistic chance of getting pregnant with their own eggs? The answer is yes, under certain conditions. One of these is access to genetic analysis of embryos, known as PGT-A.

What is PGT-A and how does it work?

PGT-A stands for "Preimplantation Genetic Testing for Aneuploidy," which is genetic screening to detect chromosomal abnormalities in the embryo before transfer.
It belongs to the group of PGD procedures that provide genetic information before implantation. The aim of this test is to select only embryos with a normal chromosome set. This can increase the chances of success and avoid failed attempts, especially in women over 40. This method is not used for sex selection and is an integral part of many IVF treatments in countries such as Spain.

Restricted in some countries like Germany, established in Spain

In Germany, preimplantation genetic diagnosis is severely restricted by law and is only permitted in rare exceptional cases. For most women who want to have children, PGT-A remains inaccessible there. In Spain, on the other hand, PGT-A is legal, medically recognized, and widely used. At Vida Fertility in Madrid and Alicante, it is routinely used, especially for patients over 40 who want to become pregnant with their own eggs.

Only one in five embryos is genetically healthy after 40

"In women over 40, on average only about one in five blastocysts is chromosomally healthy," explains Dr. Katharina Spies, Medical Director of Vida Fertility. "Without PGT-A, this often leads to repeated transfers of embryos that have no chance of success from the outset. This is not only medically frustrating, but also emotionally very stressful."

What's more, in this age group it is already difficult to achieve two or three blastocysts at all. The targeted selection of genetically healthy embryos can make a decisive difference.

Time makes the difference

"I hear the phrase 'If only I had known this earlier' far too often," reports Natasa Tu?on, who is responsible for Patient care at Vida Fertility. Many women come to the clinic too late and then have no other option but egg donation. "In many cases, six months earlier would have been enough to work with their own eggs. From the age of 40, every cycle counts."

What to do? Don't hesitate, seek answers

At Vida Fertility, a non-binding video consultation in your language can already clarify many questions and enable initial diagnostic steps to be taken. Anyone over 40 who still wants to become a mother should take action. The sooner the right information is available, the more options remain.
