The latest addition to the X-Range family - a toolkit of technologies for adding hybrid capability to dedicated BEV platforms - the X-Range C15 Direct Drive is designed as an ultra-compact ‘all-in-one’ powertrain to replace the rear electric drive unit of an existing BEV platform. The design allows automakers to use a single shared platform for their BEV, HEV, PHEV, and REEV vehicles without any major changes to vehicle design or production environments.
The X-Range C15 Direct Drive integrates an engine, transmission, power electronics, and an electric motor into a single compact unit with a shared housing, designed to mount to the rear subframe enabling a double isolated installation for best NVH. Featuring a 4-cylinder, 1.5-liter engine, the X-Range C15 Direct Drive can deliver up to 70kW (NA) or 120kW (turbo) of peak power.
The X-Range C15 Direct Drive incorporates two electric motors in a P1 + P3 configuration: the first mounted on the engine crankshaft, and a second at the transmission output shaft. The system contains the full suite of power electronics required for a modern hybrid powertrain, and seamlessly integrates with supplementary components.
HORSE W30
The HORSE W30 is Horse Powertrain’s first V6 engine, with a 3-liter displacement. This lightweight hybrid V6 has a mass of just 160kg – 10kg less than the next-lightest V6, and only marginally heavier than many 2-liter solutions currently on the market.
Capable of transverse and longitudinal installation thanks to its compact dimensions, it can output 350-400kW of power and 600-700Nm of torque, with a max speed of 8,000rpm. Intended for deployment in mild- and full-hybrid vehicles, the HORSE W30 includes features such as integrated exhaust manifolds with turbochargers mounted directly on the cylinder heads.
The HORSE W30 is designed to be used alongside the new HORSE 4LDHT transmission, a four-speed integrated gearbox and e-machine featuring two electric motors arranged in a P1 + P3 configuration. Weighing just 199kg, the 4LDHT has industry-leading power and torque density: the P1 motor used to both support the engine crankshaft and recharge the vehicle’s battery can output between 250-300kW, with the P3 motor capable of outputting between 350-400kW.
HORSE X-Range C15
Measuring just 500x550x275mm, the HORSE X-Range C15 unit is a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine designed to allow automakers to convert their BEV platforms into REEVs. Owing to its compact shape, the HORSE X-Range C15 can be installed horizontally and vertically in a variety of locations across a vehicle.
The HORSE X-Range C15 integrates a generator, exhaust, and cooling package, reflecting a full-system design philosophy that delivers market-leading compactness and exhaust performance. For B-and C-segment vehicles, a naturally aspirated variant will be able to achieve a maximum output of up to 70kW. For vehicles in D-segment and above, including pick-ups, LCVs, and HGVs, a turbocharged variant boosts output to 120kW. It can be powered by a range of fuels, including gasoline and ethanol.
HORSE X-Range F15 Direct Drive
Previously revealed as the Future Hybrid System, the HORSE X-Range F15 Direct Drive is a revolutionary ‘all-in-one’ hybrid powertrain that combines an engine, transmission, motor, and power electronics into a single system. It replaces the front electric drive unit of BEV, offering an affordable and effective way to convert BEVs into HEVs, PHEVs, and REEVs.
Currently there are two variants of the HORSE X-Range F15 Direct Drive: Performance, a 740mm-wide engine in a P1 + P3 configuration; and Ultra-Compact, a 650mm-wide engine which uses a single motor in a P2 configuration.
Both variants use a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder engine and dedicated hybrid transmission. They also contain the full suite of power electronics required for hybrid powertrains and can also seamlessly integrate with systems like a DC/DC converter, on-board charger, and an 800V charging booster to maximize performance at low voltages.
Both variants allow a BEV to be converted into an all-wheel-drive REEV in conjunction with a P4 motor located near the rear axle, with no modifications required to the front compartment’s structure. Further, the HORSE X-Range F15 Direct Drive’s Performance variant can independently propel a vehicle on its own, providing a cost-effective FWD-only hybrid solution.
Engines and range extenders
HORSE B15 Methanol + EG50
The HORSE B15 Methanol + EG50 is a range extender powertrain consisting of two complementary parts.
The first is Horse Powertrain’s HORSE B15 Methanol, a four-cylinder 1.5-liter engine, featuring a direct injection system and the ability to run on a range of methanol flex fuel blends – ranging from pure-gasoline to M100 fuel.
Using a proprietary gasoline-methanol blending technology and a high-pressure ignition system, the HORSE B15 Methanol has been optimized to run off this popular alternative fuel, with modifications to components like the cylinder block and cylinder head allowing the unit to benefit from a significantly longer service life than traditional methanol engines.
The second part of the powertrain is the HORSE EG50, a new electrical generator designed for use in a range extender configuration, capable of outputting up to 50kW of continuous power.
The HORSE EG50 leverages several Horse Powertrain’s technology innovations, including a Gallium Nitride (GaN) embedded power module for the generator that enjoys significant gains in switching speeds, relative to traditional power electronics systems. The integrated HORSE B15 Methanol + EG50 is fully compatible with China 6b emissions standards.
HORSE B20
The HORSE B20 is a four-cylinder, 2-liter gasoline engine designed for use in HEVs, PHEVs, and REEVs. Featuring a turbocharger and direct ignition technology, it can output 140-185kW of power and 300-380Nm of torque.
The HORSE B20 leverages an advanced Miller cycle with high pressure injectors, high tumble intake ports and squish pistons, and a fully variable displacement oil pump. It features a gantry-type aluminum block, an integrated exhaust manifold, and a simplified balance shaft system.
The engine is designed to be fully waterproof, making it an ideal solution for off-road vehicles that enable deep water wading. It has a sealed structure to prevent water ingress, and a system of sensors and connectors that meet IPX8 waterproof standards – ensuring continued operation up to depths of 1.1 meters.
HORSE D20 Methanol
Designed to run on pure-methanol fuel, the HORSE D20 Methanol is an optimized, high-performance engine for range extender applications.
The four-cylinder, 2-liter engine achieves ultra-lean combustion thanks to a high air-to-fuel ratio. This is achieved through a high-energy ignition system that allows complete combustion of lean fuel mixtures. The engine uses Horse Powertrain’s proprietary technology to enable pure-methanol cold starts from temperatures as low as -40°C.
Designed for use in HEV, PHEV, and REEV vehicles, the HORSE D20 Methanol will be shown with a cutting-edge ‘yokeless’ dual-rotor axial flux motor.
Designed to be mounted in a P1 configuration – directly on the engine crankshaft – the axial flux motor is one of the first systems of its kind intended for automotive mass production. This disk-shaped motor achieves a significant increase in power density and a dramatic reduction in axial length compared to current automotive e-motors, allowing its use in a wide range of applications. When coupled with innovations such as the motor’s immersion cooling system and the powertrain’s silicon carbide power modules, the system is one of the most compact and lightweight on the market.
Together the HORSE D20 Methanol and the axial flux motor can deliver up to 2kWh per liter of methanol fuel, with the motor outputting 100-120kW of continuous power.
