After 70 years in the U.S., Volvo Cars continues to evolve

In 1955, Volvo Cars imported our first car from Sweden to the United States: a PV444 with 2-doors, a manual transmission, and no standard three-point safety belts.

70 years on, our flagship EX90 is assembled right here in the United States, features the power of more than seven PV444s, and has 3-point safety belts for all seven passengers—not to mention a few other added features compared to the PV444.

For all of 2025, Volvo Car USA has been celebrating our 70 year commitment to this market: our customers here, our employees and retailers, and the investments we’re making in manufacturing and the future.

To learn even more about our 70 years in the United States and celebrate with us, we’re launching a microsite with highlights from our first 70 years in the United States that anyone can access at history.volvocars.us.

Throughout the last 70 years, Volvo Cars has always adapted to the needs of our customers and the U.S. market. We’ve pioneered safety innovations that have become industry standards, pushed to lower emissions from our vehicles, and adjusted the products we offer to cater to the tastes and needs of buyers in America—like introducing the XC90 in 2003, our first-ever SUV.

Sometimes these adaptations can be bittersweet. As our customers in the U.S. overwhelmingly prefer SUVs, early next year we’ll take the last orders for this generation of Volvo wagons, with the V60 Cross Country ending production in April 2026. For U.S. customers who love wagons, there’s still a bit of time: orders will be accepted until late January 2026, and we expect to have V60 Cross Country available in retailer inventory for a few months after that.

To learn more about V60 Cross Country or build your own before we take the final orders, please visit our website.

As we close out our 70th anniversary in the United States, we remain as committed as ever to our customers here. We will continue to adapt our products and lineup to meet the needs of our drivers, whatever form that takes.
